As of today, the blockbuster phenomenon Star Trek (2009) from producer and director J.J. Abrams has achieved the unprecedented box office success of $250 million in gross domestic revenues. That’s right, the words "Star Trek" and "a quarter of a billion dollars" in the same sentence. Its opening weekend totals shattered the former franchise record-holder First Contact (1996), setting the new record at $79.2 million. By its second weekend, on May 15 it became the highest grossing in franchise history, easily surpassing the former benchmark of $109.7 million set by The Voyage Home (1986). But this is not really a fair comparison, given the sizeable difference in ticket prices over the decades. With the totals adjusted for ticket price inflation (which more fairly reflects actual ticket sales), the franchise record-holder was The Motion Picture (1979) at $235.3 million—a record this movie officially broke in its sixth week of theatrical release on June 19 with gross domestic revenues of $235.9 million. As of today, those revenues sit at $250,570,144. (Worldwide gross box office revenues are in excess of $375.8 million.)
